Incident of the Pale Rider
Rowdy kills a man who attempted to rob him, assists at his burial, then apparently is confronted by his victim hired as a drover. With $200 in his pocket, ramrod Rowdy Yates is held up by drunken John Day. Calhoun, a drover from the Gil Favor drive, distracts Day, who fires and wounds Calhoun. Rowdy shoots and kills Day, then buries him. After Calhoun has recovered enough to travel, he, Rowdy and Hey Soos rejoin the drive. There, Gil introduces them to a new drover who calls himself Rivers. Rivers looks enough like Day to be his twin brother, but he refuses to talk about himself. Calhoun dies from blood poisoning caused by the wound from Day's gun and Hey Soos becomes certain that Rivers is a harbinger of death. Frightened, he stumbles, falls down a rocky slop and goes into a deep coma. Rowdy cannot stand the suspense a moment longer and challenges Rivers to a shoot-out or fight.
