Charles is ecstatic as he has been named 'Student of the Year' based on his scholastic record, extracurricular activities, and the fact he works to help raise three children while attending school full time. He tells Walter that he will fly to Washington, D.C. to receive the award from the President of the United States. Pat Walker, a reporter form the New Brunswick Beacon, arrives to interview Charles. Over the course of the conversation, Jamie, Sarah and Walter overhear Pat conclude that Charles is clinging to a family that has outgrown him -- and he won't leave because he can't admit he has also outgrown them.

Walter learns that the house they have been renting is being sold, and Ellen announces she lost her job in a budget cut-back. Ellen decides to get a job selling real estate, but they still face a financial crisis in the interim. Charles is distraught that the family will be displaced and he will lose his job. That night, he has a dream wherein he sees Jamie in rags scrubbing the floor, and she is calling Charles her Fairy Godfather; Walter is a one-eyed pirate searching for a treasure map; Adam is a cynical child; Sarah is dressed in Southern finery and speaks like Scarlett O'Hara, and Lillian is a jet-setter who does not know her son. To make matters worse, Count Buddy arrives dressed in 18th Century fashion announcing he is the landowner and wants them out!

Charles is assisting his history professor in a summer seminar, and he is excited with the project of updating the history textbooks to include more current events. Meanwhile, Buddy is planning their end-of-the-summer party. Jamie enters and confides in Charles that Steven Berkle, the boy she has been dating, has become extremely possessive and she wants to keep her dating horizons open. Charles is warned by Mrs. Powell not to get involved in Jamie's romantic affairs. Later, Jamie tells Charles she took his advice and invited Brad over. Just as Brad is about to invite Jamie to a party -- Steven arrives, complete with flowers, a candle and live music. When Jamie asks what it is about -- Steven says it was Charles' idea...
