In the first of two parts; a brilliant, wheelchair-bound scientist, Dr. Miles Hawkins (Carl Lumbly), invents a form of exo-skeleton called the Mechanically Augmented Neuro Transmitter System (M.A.N.T.I.S.) that turns him into a superhero and gives him the ability to fight the crime wave that is engulfing his city.

The MANTIS (Carl Lumbly) has to fight with a businessman who is trying to get hold of a deadly virus, which was meant to be destroyed days ago, and who is attempting to sell it to North Korea.

Dr. Hawkins (Carl Lumbly) starts a weapons turn-in program, only to have the weapons stolen by a band of pirates.

Several youths involved in an experiment focusing on mind augmentation receive a remarkable increase in their intelligence. However, when the drug they are taking induces the teens to follow some of their more primitive instincts, they embark on a series of violent and dangerous escapades, and it's up to the MANTIS (Carl Lumbly) to save them and their victims.

As the MANTIS (Carl Lumbly) becomes reacquainted with his former girlfriend, Miriam Basuto (guest star Gay Thomas), he discovers she is the target of an international assassin.
