Five years after the death of his long-time partner, the legendary Inspector Morse, Inspector Robert Lewis is back in Oxford and teamed up with the much younger Detective Sergeant James Hathaway. Will his new boss move him off the front lines – a plan he is determined to resist?

When a middle-aged Oxford graduate is found dead near his run-down Oxford house-boat, Detectives Lewis and Hathaway are thrown into a delicate murder case which implicates one of the University’s most prominent figures – college Principal and likely Vice-Chancellor, Sefton Linn. But as Lewis and Hathaway discover, Linn was not always so respectable. As an undergraduate, twenty odd years earlier, he was a member of a hedonistic group of friends who titled themselves ‘The Sons of the Twice Born’ - and with the dead man, Dean Greely, being part of this mysterious group...nothing is as it seems.

When a North Oxford housewife, Rachel Mallory (Emma Croft), is found hanged at home, it appears to be an open and shut case of suicide. She leaves devastated husband Hugh (James Wilby), and two young daughters, 8-year-old Anna, and 9-year-old Izzie. Hugh’s business partner, David Hayward and his wife, Louise were the Mallorys’ closest friends. With two boys of their own, they’re concerned that the girls are protected from the trauma of their mother’s death. Much to the chagrin of CSI Innocent (Rebecca Front), Inspector Lewis’ instincts tell him something’s wrong about the suicide verdict. But whether it’s the lack of a note, or the fact that Rachel’s life seemed perfect, he’s not yet sure.
