The daughter of a wealthy business man has gone missing and Morse confidently concludes the woman is dead. His inquiries take him to a boarding school for girls, where he encounters a likely suspect - the headmaster.

The tranquil cloisters of an ancient Oxford college become the scene of a gruesome revenge killing, and Morse begins to realise that he has been set up as an alibi for the people responsible for the student's death.
