Dawn turns 10 and begins her Pokémon journey, but ends up getting lost on the way to the lab to pick up her first Pokémon; Ash takes a ship to the Sinnoh region, where a surprise attack from Team Rocket endangers Pikachu.

Dawn and Piplup begin their journey and enter their first Pokémon battle; they run into Pikachu and Team Rocket, while Ash catches up with Dawn.

Ash and Brock run into a new rival named Paul, who challenges Ash to a battle, but Ash can't compete without Pikachu; Dawn and Piplup meet Ash and Brock, and together they try to rescue Pikachu from Team Rocket.

Dawn and Ash argue over the best technique for catching a Pokémon; Dawn and Ash fight battles with a bard named Nando, who must make a decision about his future.

A Turtwig thwarts Team Rocket's latest attempt to capture Pikachu, but then takes Pikachu away on its own; Ash and friends must find the protective Turtwig and convince it to return Pikachu.

After battles with each other and with Team Rocket, Ash and his rival Paul get lost in a forest full of hypnotic Stantler who trap Ash in an illusion.
