When Alex Irving - a charismatic and contradictory Indigenous woman - stands up to a gunman on a domestic violence rampage, the footage of her heroism goes viral. The embattled Prime Minister Rachel Anderson wants Alex to take up a seat in the Senate, figuring that her popularity will help the party in the polls.

Alex proves her worth to the government when a dispute escalates between China and the US, and the government is faced with an urgent demand to site a new US Army base on native title land.

There's fury in the party room that legislation critical to national security is being held up by Alex's determination to get a fair deal for the community. Meanwhile the Prime Minister faces down opposition from the right wing of the party who see this as pandering to special interests.
