In 1815, the people of France try to recover from the brutal defeat at the battle of Waterloo. Ex-convict Jean Valjean makes an enemy of the unwavering guard Inspector Javert, while seamstress Fantine is taken in by the charming Felix.
Fantine departs from Paris to find work, and is forced to make a difficult decision to give her daughter a better chance in life. Meanwhile, Jean Valjean begins living with a new identity, but Javert is set on catching him out.
