Doug Heffernan feels like the luckiest man in the world when Carrie, his wife, installs a 70-inch television in his basement lair. His excitement is short-lived, as he is quickly displaced by the arrival of Carrie's father.

After glimpsing a photo of Carrie's overweight mother, and fearing that she will grow likewise, Doug attempts to trick Carrie into going on a diet.

Carrie is given a taste of city sophistication after taking a new job at a law firm. Her position on the fast track has Doug feeling threatened.

After a double-date with Carrie, Richie, and his wife, Marie, Doug discovers that Marie is cheating on Richie, but struggles to work up the courage to break the news.

When Doug's Aunt Sheila attends his and Carrie's anniversary party, Arthur finds himself smitten, and asks permission to court the recently separated woman.

After Carrie convinces him to spend more time with Arthur, Doug learns about the risks and benefits arising from having his father-in-law out with him in public.
