Sarah Bailey has recently split up with her husband Ben and is reconnecting with her past, and trying to remain a good mother to her children Amber and Eamon. When Amber goes inexplicably missing she reverts back to old patterns as Ben once again becomes the family leader. However when Ben’s methods don’t appear to bear any fruit and as Ben begins to criticise her own performance in the media, she decides to disband the united front they have portrayed for themselves. While the police uncover some clues, nothing they find leads them to any strong conclusions to Amber’s fate. When Sarah is betrayed by her best friend, Maeve Flynn-Dunne, who has just made a quick buck by selling Sarah’s story to a tabloid newspaper, it seems the Baileys have hit rock bottom. But Maeve’s article stirs up interest from a prisoner who claims to have new information about Amber.

Maeve Flynn Dunne is a former gossip columnist and a jaded socialite who has recently profited from her friendship with Sarah Bailey. Maeve is constantly broke, partly because of her lifestyle and partly because work has dried up for her. When she is contacted by a prisoner (Terrence O’Donoghue) claiming to have new information about Amber, she sees an opportunity to redeem herself in the eyes of Sarah. Maeve begins to do her own investigating and she is unwittingly used as a pawn in a desperate man’s terrible plan.

Charlie is a Chinese national who has been living in Ireland without a visa for several years. He is in a loving relationship with an Irish girl and supports her and her young daughter. Charlie works in a second-hand electronic store in Dublin's city centre that isn’t averse to accepting stolen goods from local thieves. To make a little extra cash Charlie accepts a job unblocking and erasing data from stolen phones. When he realises that one of the phones belongs to Amber Bailey, Charlie realises that he must tell the parents. But Charlie faces a dilemma - how can he get the phone to Ben Bailey without alerting the police that he is living in Ireland illegally? Charlie decides to post the phone to the 'Find Amber' office anonymously. When no mention of the phone shows up in the news Charlie is wracked by guilt. When he tries to do the right thing he finds himself on a collision course with Amber’s father.

Months have now passed since Amber Bailey disappeared. The Bailey family has been through more emotional turmoil and public scrutiny than most people could bear. Amber’s father Ben Bailey has reached the ugliest point of his emotions and has hit rock bottom. Following an encounter with one of his daughter’s friends in a seedy nightclub, he reinvents himself and changes his strategy, becoming convinced that his daughter was befriended by an online paedophile and subsequently abducted. His journey takes him to extremely dark places, both in his mind and in his physical search for his daughter. Unlike Sarah Bailey, Ben refuses to lose hope that his daughter is still alive and remains convinced that he is the only person doing things right to find her, but it's this belief that will ultimately wreck his life.
