Father Ralph (Richard Chamberlain) must choose between his affection for Meggie (Rachel Ward) and the church.

The tragic results of a fire bring Father Ralph (Richard Chamberlain) back to Drogheda; Meggie (Rachel Ward) agrees to marry sheep shearer Luke O'Neill (Bryan Brown).

Meggie (Rachel Ward) gives birth to a daughter, Justine; Meggie unexpectedly meets Father Ralph (Richard Chamberlain) while recuperating on a secluded island.

Cardinal de Bricassart (Richard Chamberlain) returns to Australia and takes Meggie's (Rachel Ward) son to Rome to study for the priesthood; Justine (Mare Winningham) finds love with a German diplomat (Ken Howard).

Meggie quitte Luke et retourne vivre à Drogheda, avec sa fille Justine. Mais elle donne bientôt naissance à un petit garçon, Dane, sur lequel se reporte toute son affection, car cet enfant est de Ralph. Vingt ans plus tard Ralph revient à Drogheda. Il retrouve Meggie avec la même passion mais ignore que le jeune homme qu'il a en face de lui est son propre fils, comme Dane ignore que le cardinal de Bricassart, auquel il voue une grande admiration, est son père. Dane veut devenir prêtre lui aussi…Chacun suit son destin, mais Ralph, revenu mourir à Drogheda, dans les bras de Meggie, comprend alors qu'il est peut-être passé à côté du sien.
