After 20 years in Europe, nurse Sarah Adams is returning to Australia to see her grieving mother. When her hopes for reconciliation go awry, Sarah contacts George Bligh, whose mother she had nursed on the transoceanic trip, for employment. His mother, however, has other ideas.

In an effort to separate her social status from the Blighs, Sarah places an unsuspecting Roy in between her and the wealthy family. Elizabeth is clearly unimpressed, but the simmering hostility takes a back seat when Olivia's health takes a turn for the worse.

Sarah arrives at her first day on the job only to face questions from Dr. Jack Duncan about her real name. Deeply offended by the invasion of her privacy, Sarah resolves to leave Inverness—but not before revealing the truth about what happened on the ship.

Jack gets a horrible shock while accompanying Sarah on her daily rounds. Olivia’s curiosity about her husband’s former lover grows, and Sarah begins to open up about her past after spending time with a local Jewish family.

Doris Collins witnesses Sarah performing a spiritual cleansing in the creek. The Blighs receive a visit from the Swanson family. Elizabeth hopes Anna will form a romantic attachment to their son. Olivia finally realises that James was in love with her brother, William.

After learning Bert has been beating Eve, Sarah confronts him in the pub and humiliates him. Olivia confronts James with her suspicions and their marriage reaches breaking point. Eve goes into labour and with the help of George, Sarah delivers the baby safely.
