1887. A winter's night. A woman is pursued by a band of mysterious men. She entrusts her baby, named "Loulou" to a priest in Montmartre, Father Menard, after warning him of the "Man with the Silver Cane", one of her pursuers. Life at boarding school turns out to be a nightmare for Loulou. Mlle Trochu, the headmistress, and Solange, a rich and spoiled pupil, despise and humiliate Loulou constantly because she is poor and doesn't know who her parents are. So, despite her undeniable talent, Loulou is not allowed to attend dance classes, because she cannot pay for them.

Fearing for Loulou's life, Father Menard has to elude the surveillance of the Man with the Silver Cane, who is trying to discover what the priest is hiding from him. It's Loulou's birthday. On this special day, for the first time, Father Menard tells her the story of how she was abandoned and of the grave danger her mother was in.

Following her nocturnal escapade, Loulou is deprived of Christmas celebrations by Mlle Trochu, who is determined to tame this insolent little miss. On the other side of Paris, Baron Boisrobert has not given up his ambition to seize the Montmartre land. He orders his henchmen, including the Man with the Silver Cane,

Under cover of all the excitement surrounding the preparations for New Year, Loulou, assisted by Charlotte, goes up to search the attic and recovers the ballet shoes confiscated by Mlle Trochu. They are her only link to her mother. She sees that they have a swan embroidered on them.

After Father Menard's death, Mlle Trochu savours her revenge. She can now humiliate Loulou to her heart's content. She doesn't flinch from beating her and giving her menial tasks like doing housework around the school. Gaby and his grandfather, Daredevil, decide to help Loulou escape from this prison under cover of a conjuring show.
