The postliminary inquiries into Harry Newman's past and the identities of the possible twelve murder victims uncover a connection to the infamous trial and execution of a well known gangster.

The team reinvestigates the unsolved murder of Home Office advisor Katherine Reed. Katherine was a prominent feminist academic who swapped sides to join the establishment. Boyd and the team discover a trail of intrigue that leads all the way to the top.

Whle facing a surprise audit from the Home Office, DCI Boyd (Trevor Eve) and the team try to continue their investigation into the murder ... but as they go on with their inquiries at Whitehall, they quickly discover the atmosphere to be very dark and secretive.

Threatened by the investigation, Joanna Gold's killer has struck again and now begins to stalk her younger sister, Clara. She persuades Boyd to let her wear the red dress and go onto the Heath in an attempt to catch her stalker. When the Commissioner hears of this dangerous plan, he furiously intervenes. Boyd is in deep trouble.

The case of an ex-soldier found dead with his skull nailed to the floor in 1948 has been reopened due to media attention and pressure created by his grandson. The team discover a similar murder dating back to the 1960s. Then the killer strikes again and a further victim is found nailed to the floor - this time in a nursing home for the elderly. Is World War II the common link? The team must find the next possible victim, but no one knows where he is.

The Cold Case Squad discover that the victims were a group of friends who were all in the same army regiment during the war. It seems the murderer is killing as an act of revenge.
