In the series premiere, Alyssa and her boyfriend Kano met and fell in love while studying at the University of Tampa. In order for their relationship to continue, Alyssa tells Kano that he must win over her Abuela, Maria del Carmen, and pass the infamous "evil eye" test. Kano, however, is terrified of how it will pan out.

After eight years of dating, Michael popped the question to Alexia and she said yes. The couple now find themselves vying for the blessing of Mercedes, Alexia's non-English speaking Abuela, who cherishes her family's Cuban heritage and culture above all else. Will Michael be able to impress Mercedes despite the language barrier?
