The Great Indian Family
The film is set in the fictional town of Balrampur where Vedvyas Tripathi (Vicky Kaushal) lives with his colourful family. Vedvyas is better known as Bhajan Kumar and is a famous bhajan singer of the town. His father, Pandit Siyaram Tripathi (Kumud Mishra), is a respected member of the society and a famous pandit who has many influential people as his clients. The family also includes an uncle aka Balakram Tripathi (Manoj Pahwa), his wife Hema (Sadiya Siddiqui), Aunty Susheela Kumari (Alka Amin), and Vedvyas’s twin sister Gunja (Srishti Dixit). Since childhood, Vedvyas has known that sometimes the family has inadvertently been the cause of his embarrassment and he always likens his life to a game of snakes and ladders. Bhajan Kumar’s life with his friends and his quirky family was going well, and so much so that one day he meets a girl, Jasmeet (Manushi Chhillar).Though the circumstances of their meeting were less than perfect but he knew in his heart that the dawn of a new love had broken in his life. And then one day, soon after his father had left for his pilgrimage, a letter arrives. A letter that was to create the biggest conflict of his and his family’s lifeThe letter fundamentally changed the way Vedvyas, his family, his friends and slowly the whole neighbourhood, all looked at him. A letter that not only confused him but gradually allowed the whole world to look at him as an impostor, and before one knew it, Bhajan Kumar was no longer the beloved singer of the city but a man who lost his friends and his family in a jiffy. As he learns to deal with his new crisis he looks at the world afresh, he manages to look at his own past and his prejudices, and sometimes when the times are tough, they bring with them a lesson that life teaches us. That perhaps in the differences there is some truth and beauty and that when we stop fighting it we come to a greater understanding of ourselves and only then can we say that we are all a part of…The Great Indian Family.
