Ubaldo, an unlucky bank clerk from São Paulo, takes care of his sick adoptive father. On the verge of despair, Ubaldo comes across a letter notifying him as heir to a vast estate in Cratará.

Ubaldo wakes up inside a grave, next to the corpse of Virulento, the bandit who got killed in the heist. Faco and Moeda, a pair of cangaceiros who neithertrust him nor believe what he said on the road, cast him a nasty glance.

Stunned by the countless stories about his father's mythical past, Ubaldo denies his heritage and leaves the place, preferring to settle in a local inn. Dilvania visits him and takes him to his parents' grave.

With a bag of money at his feet, Ubaldo looks in the mirror and questions himself. He later receives a worried call from Raul, who tells him that Cratará is now his home.
