The roof of the Royal London Hospital, one of the UK's leading trauma centres, is the home base of London's Air Ambulance, an around-the-clock service that is made up of an elite group of specialist medics. The team, which travel to sites in a helicopter or a rapid-response car when it is unsafe to fly, provide pre-hospital medical care to people in time-critical, and often life-threatening, situations that commonly include serious traffic collisions, industrial accidents and injuries on the rail network. Upon arriving at the scene, the doctors must conduct on-the-spot investigations to determine what happened to the patient and decide how to treat the person.
