Ted and Barney get involved in a fight at their local bar to experience one and impress Robin respectively. Their friend Doug does all the fighting, but allows Barney and Ted to take credit in the fight.

Lily's long-lost dad shows up unannounced on Thanksgiving Day. She confides the real reason she stopped speaking to him three years ago but she and Marshall disagree on how they should deal with the dispute. Will Lily take Marshall's advice and forgive her dad?

Zoey sets Ted up on a date with her naïve cousin. Ted realises that he loves Zoey but tries to push her away so that he doesn't cause trouble in her relationship. Meanwhile, Marshall takes up some of his old habits.

Marshall is ready to celebrate the 300,000th kilometre travelled by his car, a Fiero, but it stops right in the middle of the street.

Ted and Robin are surprised to bump into Barney when they volunteer at a homeless refuge during Thanksgiving. Lily's nerves are tested when she goes for Thanksgiving dinner at her future in-laws' house.

While on a trip to Minnesota, Ted and Barney try anything to make Marshall laugh. Marshall runs into an old nemesis from high school.
