During its missions over the German Reich, the B -17 FLYING FORTRESS proved to be a resistant aircraft with effective all-round defenses. Nevertheless, many B-17s were shot down. This changed with the appearance of escort fighters. Now, the German pilots had to deal with the escort fighters before they could aim on bomber targets.
