S1, E3: Egypt grew ever more powerful. At the Colossi of Memnon and the Valley of the Kings, Joann explores the dizzying heights Egypt reaches under its greatest pharaoh, Amenhotep III. This golden age is threatened by the growing power of the priests but Joann reveals how Tutankhamen's early death was a chance for Egypt to start afresh. Joann then traces the desecration caused by the Theban priest kings; and decades of state-sanctioned looting of the Valley of the Kings. Egypt is laid bare, making way for a new era of foreign invaders.
