Before the Lights Go Out
A meditation on finding community in a foreign land, against the odds of language barriers, visa restrictions, and unexpected setbacks. Told through a non-traditional story arc where resolution may not come easily, it explores the struggles of carving out a life in a fast-moving world, leaving audiences to reflect on their own connection to belonging. We follow Joaquin, who has been skating since the age of 11 and spent his twenties chasing stability across multiple countries. Arriving in Australia with just $300 in his pocket, he discovers a vibrant skate community that bridges the distance of families left behind. But when an unexpected injury threatens his ability to extend his visa, he faces the possibility of once again being forced to leave in search of a stable future. Through it all, Joaquin finds resolve in knowing that wherever he lands, the sport he loves will always lead him back to community.
