Private Investigator Bruno Genko (Toni Servillo), who is on the verge of death, revisits a cold case after the victim turns up alive. A thirteen year old who was kidnapped and long held prisoner, Sam is now suddenly free, traumatised and wounded. She is hospitalised and examined by profiler Dr. Green (Dustin Hoffman), who exploring her mind, hunts the monster that kept her locked away all these years. Within the memories of Sam, the clues to solving the case begin to unfold, as Bruno begins to seek answers of his own.
