Helen Morgan (Ann Blyth--Kismet, Mildred Pierce; Gogi Grant, singing voice) is discovered by Larry Maddux (Academy Award winner Paul Newman--Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, "Empire Falls"), who guides her rise from obscurity to stardom as a nightclub singer and Broadway star. But Maddux's inability to return Morgan's love both fuels the deep longing in her vocals that makes her a star . . . and the alcoholism that eventually destroys her.
