The Doctor, Jamie and Carstairs after trying very hard to get there finally manage to return to the 1917 zone only to be suddenly captured by Smythe, who orders the Doctor executed.

The Doctor and the processing machine have suddenly been taken by the Aliens. However, the resistance have decided that it is time to make plans to try to attack the control centre.

The TARDIS lands in what appears to be the front-line trenches at the height of the battle in war-torn France, in the middle of World War I. Everyone they meet is convinced that the crew are spies and soon they're on the run.
