Martin's new receptionist makes a poor first impression; Louisa and Martin find sleepless nights are taking their toll.

Having worked as missionaries in Kenya, Morwenna's parents, Jack and Tara Newcross, pay her a surprise visit, and are surprised by the relationship between her and Al.

Martin returns to Portwenn, but without Louisa. She has gone to stay with her mother in Spain to take some time out to think, and Martin is left wondering if she will ever come back. Aunt Ruth has found him a therapist.

After successfully rekindling their relationship in spite of, rather than because of, their couples therapy, Louisa and Martin are living together again in the surgery. Meanwhile, Portwenn is buzzing with anticipation for Janice and Penhale's wedding.

With Janice having left, Martin and Louisa need to find a nursery for James. He is accepted at Portwenn Tots, but not before Martin can insult the nursery manager, Mel.

James is teething and nobody is getting any sleep. In desperation, Martin and Louisa agree to try Mel's suggestion of amber beads. They appear to be working, until James ends up with a bead stuck up his nose.
