While investigating the disappearance of the USS Archon on the planet Beta III, Kirk and his crew encounter an old-style Western community brainwashed and subservient to a sinister godlike figure called Landru.

The crew of the USS Enterprise are on the trail of a missing historian. The search leads Kirk and Spock to the planet Ekos where the streets are decorated with swastikas and patrolled by jack-booted soldiers.

Viv flies to California to visit Lucy and admits that she's looking for a young college student from her hometown, who she believes has fallen in with the no-good beatnik crowd. Lucy and Viv disguise themselves as hippies to track the youth down.
