A naive man's lawyer becomes obsessed with proving his client's innocence, after the man is accused of murder and can only be saved by his wife's alibi.

Leonard Vole, a handsome young man, is accused of the brutal murder of a widow in a London townhouse. His lawyer, John Mayhew, pins his hopes on an alibi provided by Vole's wife.

Episode 2
Romaine turns on both Leonard and Mayhew, leaving their defence close to defeat as she refuses to give testimony. Mayhew's unshakeable belief in Leonard's innocence pushes him to continue.
