Seven years after the disappearance of her daughter Josefine, police investigator Eva Thornblad is still trying to come to terms with her grief.

As Eva continues her investigation into the girl and her disease, it emerges that it was the same that afflicted her own father.

Josefine has disappeared from the hospital and Eva joins the local police force in the search. Her colleague, Tom, suspects Eva of involvement, but the suspicion turns into a burgeoning interest.

Eva notices a mysterious bottle left behind at her father's house before discovering a tunnel extending from the forest all the way up to the front door.

The mysterious creature from the forest wants Eva to give him another girl in place of Josefine, otherwise he will refuse her any more medicine.

Eva decides to abduct a girl and set a trap for whoever took her daughter, but when the plan fails and the girl disappears, Eva tells Wass what she has done.
