When Patricia Cheng (Joan Chen) persuades her next door neighbour Sam Callaghan (Don Hany) to investigate the murder of a US sailor in Bugis Street, it's secretly part of her plan to get him to leave the dodgy import/export business he runs with his mate Kang (Alaric Tay) and work for her struggling detective agency. Sam warns her that having the CIA for a client is bound to get them into trouble, but he also knows that since the murder of Patricia's husband Winston four months earlier, she has been in severe financial straits. To keep the agency afloat and pay office secretary Su Ling (Pamelyn Chee), Patricia can't afford to turn down a client. Not even the CIA.

When 45-year-old Chan Feng (Xiang Yun) jumps from a refugee boat to avoid arrest, it's just the latest in a long list of struggles she has endured to make it from post-war China back to Singapore in search for her long lost husband. When her story reaches Macca (Tony Martin), the potential news value of this story of war-torn love leads him to hire the Cheng Detective Agency to find her husband, Chan Li.

While delivering some photographs to a former agency client Patricia (Joan Chen) is caught up in the riots sweeping through the streets of Singapore. She's hurt and left unconscious. It turns out that she was deliberately attacked and the photographs stolen. Hafiz (Osman Sulaiman), a Malay photo journalist, takes her to safety, so when Hafiz is accused of being involved in the riots, Patricia and Sam (Don Hany) work to prove his innocence. The trail leads them to a secret MI6/Special Branch operation against subversives.

While trying to sort out Kang's(Alaric Tay) gambling debts to the Red Dragons' heir Kay Song (Chin Han), Sam is reluctantly drawn into the detective agency's investigation into whether Claire Simpson's (Maeve Dermody) husband Frank (Jeremy Lindsay Taylor) has been taking kickbacks from clients. If the allegation is proved, Frank's boss Maxwell Black (Nicholas Bell) will kick Frank out of the company (and Singapore), separating Sam and Claire forever.

When Claire finds the medicines Maxwell Black's (Nicholas Bell) company is providing to children in a small village hospital aren't working, she insists that the company investigate the problem. Sam discovers that the genuine drugs are being diluted. It's all part of an elaborate scam run by the Secret Society to make worried families of the sick turn to expensive black market substitutes. But for Claire, solving this one creates problems that affect Sam, her husband Frank, and others.

Patricia and Sam discover a newborn baby on the doorstep of the Cheng Detective Agency. Why there, and where do they start their search for the mother? Meanwhile, Su Ling (Pamelyn Chee) confronts her fears over her relationship with Conrad (Michael Dorman). What does it mean whenPatricia receives a package containing her dead husband's fob watch, which was believed stolen when he was murdered. And Kang does a deal with the Devil.
