Aurore, a 10-year-old girl, often escapes from her mother to play in the marshes; one evening, she joins two children, Paulo and his sister Maya, who play in the sand.

Aurore is trying to escape her past, but when her new identity is exposed a public outcry forces her to move; Maya is still traumatised by her brother's murder and is seeking revenge.

Aurore seeks out an old colleague who agrees to help her lie low, but Maya has convinced a journalist to speak to Aurore and uncover her closely guarded secrets from childhood.
