Walking Britain's Lost Railways

The former Elgin to Portsoy line in Scotland once served the fishing and whisky industries. Rob follows the line and with the locals' help finds a view of the Spey Bridge, tries a tipple of the country's finest and watches a boat race in Portsoy.

Starting his journey in the steel town of Sheffield, Rob follows the line over the bleak Pennines, before arriving in the industrial powerhouse of Manchester.

Now covered in dense overgrowth, the Plymouth to Exeter line was originally built to transport ride pudding around the country. Following the Granite Way, Rob discovers the rock used as foundation for railway tracks all over the country.

There is barely any evidence that a railway track once ran through the Lake District. Rob discovers that this long-gone railway line once served miners and sustained the entire region with hard industry before turning into a tourist hotspot.

Rob travels along the Somerset and Dorset line, a track that once transformed the fortunes of seaside towns. But the upkeep proved too expensive and the boggy Somerset Levels presented a challenge for laying down tracks.

Rob takes a memorable trip across the Stream in the Sky on the breathtaking Pontcysyllte Aquaduct, as he rediscovers the lost line from Ruabon to Barmouth.
