As the threat of the Nazi regime looms large over Europe, translator Harry Chase vows to help his Polish lover Kasia flee Warsaw.
A month after the outbreak of war, and Warsaw is unrecognisable, while Manchester, on the surface, continues very much the same. Harry returns to Manchester but struggles to tell Lois his secret.
Tom fights for his life on board the HMS Exeter, at the Battle of River Plate in December 1939. Meanwhile, Harry and Lois have a more personal battle to fight.
Harry's courage is tested at Louvain when he comes face-to-face with a German sniper; Kasia's resistance activity in Warsaw intensifies; Grzegorz and Konrad are woken by a German troop.
Harry leads his unit on the route to Dunkirk, and they fight to make it onto the beach and aboard a ship; Grzegorz and Tom also struggle to survive the chaos of the evacuation.
The Nazis have taken Paris in June 1940. Webster and Albert's life in the city they love will never be the same.
