My Pakistan

Pakistani society is in flux. Whilst some uphold the traditions of a conservative Muslim society, many are demanding more freedom, and equality for women. Rock musician Aaiz rebels against the older generation with provocative lyrics and lawyer Neha is fighting against forced marriage. Imam Abdul Jameel, on the other hand, calls for religious rules to be observed.

Pakistan is a country in which Islamic and conservative values characterise everyday life. However, minorities are also part of society and fight for their rights, such as the trans activist Shahzadi, the Hindu scholar Kailesh whilst the comedian Amtul questions the traditional role of women.

In Pakistan, two-thirds of the population is under 30, and their standard of living depends on their family background. Faizan is a mechanic and dreams of having his own workshop, but finds it hard to feed his family. Umair teaches children from disadvantaged backgrounds in a rural school. Photographer Rabbania, on the other hand, comes from a wealthy family and is successful in the art world.

The Pakistani diaspora in Britain is well-established with around 1.5 million people in Britain having Pakistani roots, with a large community in London. Ahad is a successful DJ who moved from Pakistan to London when he was a child. Mahi and Irfan run a clothes shop and Roshy and Sima help women from South Asian families build confidence and realise their potential.
