A talkative farmer's son, Eiichi, schemes to see a sinner; in Edo, a political plot unfolds for the next shogun.

Eiichi begins learning about indigo dye trading from his father. When the village's upcoming lion dance festival is suddenly cancelled, he begins hatching a plan.

Eiichi visits Edo for the first time. He decides to go and buy indigo leaves himself to help his father, whose business is struggling due to a poor harvest.

The 60th historical drama depicts the life of Shibusawa Eiichi, known as the Father of Capitalism in Japan. He lived from the mid-19th to early 20th century, contributing to around 600 public projects, and led around 500 enterprises to success.

Eiichi reads about China's defeat in the Opium Wars and begins to worry about Japan's future. His sister Naka has her marriage blocked due to her uncle's superstitious beliefs.

Eiichi trains in swordsmanship with Choshichiro and Kisaku, believing that even a peasant like him can make a difference. Later, Chiyo confesses her feelings to him, leaving him flustered, and a challenger from another dojo appears before Eiichi.
