Growing up a skinny kid in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Derek Jeter dreamed of becoming the starting shortstop for the New York Yankees. Little did he know that dream was only the beginning. Making his debut in pinstripes on May 29, 1995, Jeter’s career of firsts began when he became the first Yankee to win Rookie of the Year honors by unanimous vote in 1996. Thereafter, his path is littered with spectacular achievement: a dozen All-Star Games, five World Championships, the Captaincy of the New York Yankees. Iconic, legacy-defining moments such as “The Jeter Flip” and “Mr. November” are too numerous to catalog. In 2009, he became the all-time Yankees hit leader, climbing past larger-than-life legends Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig… rarefied company to be sure. Finally, on June 11, 2011, Jeter achieved another first: the only New York Yankee (and 28th Major Leaguer) to collect 3,000 hits. Not bad for a skinny kid with a dream from Kalamazoo.
