Hear and Now
HEAR AND NOW is a deeply personal memoir by Emmy Award- winning filmmaker Irene Taylor Brodsky about her deaf parents’ decision to undergo risky cochlear implant surgery. The film documents the couple’s complex, moving journey from their comfortable world of silence to a new and profoundly challenging world of sound. HEAR AND NOW is at heart a love story between two people who found one other and grew together in a world of silence. It explores the psychological dimensions of adapting to a restored sense of hearing and just how subjective the sense of sound can be. How will this transform them, their relationship with each other, their children and the deaf world they are leaving behind? Will they still be deaf, or hearing, or something in between? This is the of two people gifted their fifth sense only late in their lives. The question is, what will they make of it? And what might they gain – or lose – forever?
