Greta Garbo stars as the doomed Anna Karenina in a loose adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's classic story of a woman who sacrifices everything for Love. Tzarist Russia. Captain Count Alexei Vronsky (John Gilbert) helps Anna Karenina (Garbo) after her sleigh has overturned in the snow. Vronsky falls deeply in love with Karenina, only to discover that she is married. Yet he pursues a courtship, eventually winning the heart of the beautiful young Karenina. But their tryst means that Karenina will never be able to see her son--and Vronsky's name and reputation will forever be tarnished. Now, Karenina can see only one terrible way to escape her shame.
