Monkey's Magic Merry Go Round
James Jensen, the upbeat host of the children’s show Monkey’s Magic Merry Go Round, begins an episode about 'Memory' only to realize he has none of his own. As he sings and plays with his puppet co-host Monkey and the whimsical Playground Pals, cracks form in the bright backyard set. The puppets warn that a creature called 'the Freak' has stolen James’s memories. Attempts to help him remember send the show spiraling into surreal violence. Letters from the Post Lady—whom James recognizes as his mother—and a book of matches trigger fragments of a traumatic past, including a childhood house fire. As memories resurface, the puppets grow grotesque and accusatory, blurring fantasy and reality. Monkey ultimately declares that James himself is 'the Freak' and must be fixed. Tied to the Merry Go Round, James is forced to confront the truth: an absent mother, an alcoholic father, and the fire that shattered his childhood. Awakening from denial, he breaks free from Monkey’s control, destroys the illusion of the set, and accepts that the fire was not his fault. Remembering where he left his key, James finally unlocks the door to his home—choosing healing over repression.
