The Great Lie
Sometimes there's a terrible penalty for telling the truth. Academy Award winners Bette Davis and Mary Astor star with George Brent in this classic romantic drama about two women in love with the same man -- and the extremes to which they will go to have him -- in The Great Lie. Maggie Peterson (Davis--All About Eve, Dark Victory) and concert pianist Sandra Kovak (Astor--The Maltese Falcon) both love aviator Peter Van Allen (Brent--Dark Victory). But Sandra seduces Peter into a secret marriage--just before he goes missing on a secret government mission. Now, pregnant and seemingly unmarried, Sandra fears the scandal will ruin her career. In an act of kindness, Maggie agrees to rear the child . . . but when Peter returns alive, Sandra demands the child back, believing he will force Peter to return to their marriage despite his love for Maggie.
