During a meeting with an old friend, lawyer Jeff Reiser, Sergeant Ali McCormick learns that a recently released juvenile he defended may be a serial killer on the loose. Reiser tells Ali that Randy Benjamin served four years for his part in luring young boys to Simon Willard, the convicted monster behind the notorious Pitt River Murders. Though mindful of lawyer-client privilege, Reiser suggests to Ali that Benjamin may be as much of a monster as Willard. He hints that she might want to look into the unsolved 1993 murder of Stanley Caron in order to put Benjamin back behind bars. Caron, a middle-aged bank manager, was found dead at a motel; a young male prostitute was seen leaving the scene in a cab.
