Poor financial conditions influence the Ingalls family to move to Winoka when Mary goes there to teach at the Blind School. They meet Albert, an orphan who Charles forms an attachment to, even though Laura catches him stealing from the hotel that Charles was managing and Caroline was running the kitchen/dining room for.

Solomon Henry, an 11-year-old black child runs away from home to pursue his dream of attending school somewhere. He comes across Charles Ingalls in Mankato, hitches a ride in the back of his wagon. He eventually becomes a guest in the Ingalls home. As he helps out around the farm and goes to school in Walnut Grove, Solomon's optimistic attitude is an inspiration to the whole family.
