Private detective Valentijn Rixtus Bentinck Valentine sneaks into a party where he is arrested and becomes the prime suspect in a murder case. At the police station, he meets beautiful and ambitious prosecutor, Suze Geleijnse.

When Valentijn realizes a painting he owns--'Girl in Kimono', a Breitner--is a forgery, he joins Suze at the Municipal Museum in The Hague to find information about the false Breitner.

When one of the patients is murdered, Valentijn searches for possible suspects amongst the patients and staff.

Suze's mentor, Simon den Oever, is killed in a car accident. When it is found that the brakes were sabotaged, Suze believes Valentijn knows a witness and recruits him to investigate.

Valentijn decides to visit Jean-Paul van Garderen, who just became head of the medical faculty, where samples of a lethal virus have gone missing. When one of Garderen's colleagues dies from an infection from the virus, it appears to be murder.

Suze requests Valentijn's help in entertaining violinist Monica Altobelli. The fun is soon off when Monica's Stradivarius violin disappears. During the search of the famous violin, Valentijn finds a dead violin-maker.
