Partially Deceased Syndrome sufferer Kieren Walker returns to his home village of Roarton, but does not receive a warm welcome from all. His parents, Steve and Sue, are undoubtedly pleased to see him, but his sister, Jem, is not.

Feeling trapped at home, Kieren escapes to his grave where he is reunited with his old hunting partner, Amy Dyer, who persuades him to take a dangerous day trip; after fleeing when he is spotted, Kieren discovers that Rick is back in town.

After visiting the supermarket where he used to hunt with Amy, Kieren remembers that Jem once spared his life; together, brother and sister confront the demons in their pasts and visit Mr. and Mrs. Lancaster.

Though apparently in the PDS-friendly world of Roarton, Kieren's dream of escape may be further away.

Kieren is dismayed when his Roarton escape plan is crushed by Maxine, however he is surprised to find a compelling reason to stay. When Jem is humiliated at school by a pupil with a mysterious vendetta, she gravitates to Gary to try and prove her bravery, to devastating effect.

Kieren and Simon must work together on the Give Back Scheme; Freddie Preston returns to find his childhood sweetheart.
