Mon fils

Marielle is shocked when she realizes Jacob's situation. Seeing her beloved son in such distress is profoundly upsetting. Is it heartbreak, a case of depression or drug and alcohol abuse? Marielle wants to intervene immediately so that this unfortunate (and temporary!) episode never happens again. But the reality is even more difficult to accept when the doctors they consult do not exclude anything and even mention the possibility of a serious mental illness.

After his psychotic episode, Jacob intends to take his life in hand. But this good behaviour takes its toll. He's increasingly anxious, has panic attacks and often feels like he's being singled out. At his birthday dinner, Jacob argues with his father and walks out. When he returns home, Marielle suspects he's been using, but Jacob denies it. Tempers flare, he becomes incoherent and has hallucinations. Marielle has to take him to the psychiatric emergency.

"Jacob is still in the psychiatric care unit, about to be discharged by Dr. Landry. When he returns, the whole family gathers for dinner and Jacob tells his parents that he wants to go live with his father. Marielle is hurt. Even though Vincent is more relaxed than Marielle, Jacob still feels pressure from his father. As was to be expected, Jacob leaves without telling anyone. Marielle and Vincent start looking for their son. Jacob is not well."

Jacob arrives at the hospital by ambulance. He's in crisis and refuses treatment. The medical team puts him in isolation and decides to seek a court order for his treatment. Marielle is asked to testify to support the request. Jacob takes this as a betrayal, he screams at his mother. Marielle is devastated. The decision has been made: Jacob must take his medication.

Jacob is getting better and is about to leave the unit, which leaves Laurence confused. He tells his parents that he has decided to go to a supervised halfway house. Marielle and Vincent do not understand and feel rejected. Jacob's adjustment to his new home goes well, but he still refuses to have any contact with his mother. A tragic event upsets Jacob and makes him realize how vulnerable he is.

Jacob is on his way to recovery, and moves into his own apartment. He finds a job, but must deal with the pitfalls of life. He realizes that his recovery will be a constant struggle. Fortunately, he has the help of Francine, who's there to support him and knows the right words to help Jacob avoid the worst. With his friend Béatrice, Jacob organizes a screening of Raïd's work in order to pay tribute to him.
