Twelve-year-old Devie lives in India with her parents, her smaller brother and her maternal grandmother. Their religion - Hinduism - is an integral part of their daily life. In fact, their family is responsible for taking care of the local village's Hindu temple. The Onam festivities are an opportunity for Devie to enjoy good food and traditional dance in the company of her extended family

Lilian is Brazilian. She is the newest member of a family of sixty! She lives with her parents, her grandparents and three of her aunts. Despite her tender age of four, her grandmother and mother have already started teaching her how to cook and do the dishes.

Ten-year-old Theo lives in England. His parents are divorced. On weekdays, he and his sister, Martha, live with their mom and her fiancé, Mike. They spend Wednesdays and week-ends with their father, who lives with his new wife, Sally, and her two daughters, Kim and Ellis.
