In 1783, Ross Poldark returns from the war to find his estate in ruins and his sweetheart Elizabeth is set to marry his cousin, Francis.

Ross tries to raise funds to reopen his mine, but Verity's relationship with Captain Andrew Blamey drives a rift between the two Poldark families.

Ross must defend his friend Jim in court, whilst Elizabeth and Francis celebrate the birth of a son.

Ross' marriage to Demelza threatens his business and Demelza becomes anxious when the couple are invited to Trenwith for Christmas.

Demelza tries to reconcile Verity and Captain Blamey, whilst Ross joins other mines in setting up a smelting company to rival George's operations.
