Dewey, a has-been musician, poses as a substitute teacher and inspires his students to create a secret rock band. When Summer wants to be the lead singer, Tomika must choose between her friend or going for the role herself.
When the band is in need of a backup singer Summer enlists Tomika to help her secure the spot, but she must ultimately decide which is most important; this position in the band or her friendship with Tomika.
Lawrence accidentally offers to install surveillance cameras in all classrooms for Principal Mullins which puts the band in danger of being exposed. Dewey, Lawrence, and the gang must work together to expertly evade discovery.
In Summer’s ongoing search to find her role in the band, she sets out to become the band’s songwriter. When she has difficulty expressing her inner artist, Dewey helps Summer channel her feelings to find true inspiration.
Dewey’s inspiring lesson on rock rebellion backfires when Zack’s dad catches him on the electric guitar at home, and moves Zack to another class with less distraction. Dewey and the kids rally and rebel to get him back.
The band books its first gig but can’t decide on a name, causing it to split into two bands. The group’s future is at risk until they ultimately realize that they are better together, and just in time to rock a kid’s party.
