Against her wishes, Chiara leaves Rome for Matera when her mother calls to tell her that her sister, Elena, is missing.

The reason for Chiara's coldness toward her sister is revealed when Elena's ex-husband comes to town; Chiara confronts the neighbors, accusing them of leaving horrible notes around the house.

Having found Elena's body, Silvia and Chiara try to piece together what happened; while the police lean toward suicide, Chiara has her doubts.

When Elena's car is found, the police seem more willing to consider foul play; Roberto and Chiara take the kids out for the day, to a place they had visited before with Elena.

The evidence is mounting and all signs point to Roberto, but he is unwilling to tell the police her saw Elena on the night of her death.

After receiving a cryptic letter, Chiara's own investigation leads to a man called Nicola Gambi, a former student and lover of Elena's with a lingering obsession.
