The King, a non-rightful heir, suffers insomnia and manic paranoia as he fears the actions he has committed. He concocts a plan to replace himself with a jester in order to rid the threat of assassination.
Ha-seon, the king's jester, strives to keep his word to the Queen going to lengths of defying the King's orders. Outside the palace, Dal-rae, is assaulted for the price of 2 nyang's causing rage to Ha-seon.
Ha-seon, returns to the palace swearing vengeance to Shin Yi-gyum. A hunt is planned making many anxious. Meanwhile, plans are made to assassinate the 'King' during the hunt.
The King's concubine is poisoned through tea leaves in the Queen's presence. The Queen finds herself in accusation, thus Ha-seon looks for a way to relieve her. Meanwhile, the King's health declines.
The King's health declines beyond recovery and Ha-seon is told he is to become King. Ha-seon is carved a scar exact to the King's appearance. Ha-seon implements a new taxation law and calls upon a mathematician to assist him.
Ha-seon is thrilled at the Queen's feelings, however he hurts as he comes to a realization that the feelings are not meant for him, but for the King. Meanwhile, Ha-seon investigates the court's embezzlement and strikes Shin Yi-gyum.
